Stop losing good apprentices to the wrong kind of support

Specialist help for neurodivergent apprentices and technicians in engineering, electrical and technical roles — from someone who understands ADHD, autism and dyslexia and knows their way around a three-phase distribution board.

The problem

A struggling apprentice is an expensive problem with a fixable cause

When an apprentice falls behind on college assessments, misreads written procedures, or clashes with a supervisor over how instructions are given, the usual response is generic: try harder, more reviews, maybe a warning. But if the underlying cause is ADHD, autism, dyslexia or dyspraxia — diagnosed or not — generic pressure makes things worse. You lose the apprentice, the training investment, and the levy funding. The fix is usually a set of practical, inexpensive adjustments. The hard part is knowing which ones — and that takes someone who understands both neurodivergent learning and real technical work.

How it works

Diagnose. Recommend. Support.

1

Diagnose

A fixed-fee assessment. We work one-to-one with your apprentice and liaise with their training provider and line manager to understand exactly how they learn and where the friction is.

2

Recommend

A plain-English written report with practical adjustments for the workplace and the classroom — how instructions are given, how tasks are structured, how assessments are approached.

3

Support

Optional one-to-one specialist sessions building organisation, study skills and workplace strategies — with Access to Work guidance that can fund ongoing support at little or no cost to you.

Who this is for

Two ways employers use this service

Rescue a struggling apprentice

  • First-year apprentice failing college assessments or portfolio work
  • Technician who does great practical work but can’t get it on paper
  • Friction between an apprentice and a supervisor over instructions or feedback
  • An apprentice at risk of withdrawal you’d rather keep

Make your training work for everyone

  • CPD for trainers and supervisors on neuro-inclusive delivery
  • Review of your technical training materials and methods
  • Reasonable adjustments advice for technical and safety-critical roles
  • Support with EDI and apprentice retention goals you can evidence

Who you’re working with

Engineers first, specialist mentors second

Most neurodiversity consultants have never set foot in a plant room. Most technical trainers have no grounding in how neurodivergent people actually learn. Lateral Minds exists to close that gap: our practice combines decades of electrical, electronics and radio communications engineering — including vocational technical training delivered in industry — with qualified-teacher status and specialist mentoring for autistic and ADHD learners in higher education.

That means adjustments that survive contact with a workshop: chunked isolation procedures, visual task boards that work next to a distribution panel, instruction styles that land in a noisy environment. Practical, not performative.

  • Level 4 DSA specialist mentoring (autism specialism)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (PGCE)
  • Telecommunications engineering degree-qualified
  • Decades of engineering & technical training experience
  • Active specialist mentoring for university STEM students
  • Based in Lincolnshire, delivering UK-wide
